Default Shaft length

How do measure the shaft length on a motor and how do you determine what length you need on a boat?

Measure the transom from its top edge down to the bottom of the hull. Measure the OB from the top of the inside of the transom clamp/mount down to the cavitation plate.
If you are shopping for a kicker, and want to be able to back troll, get one the same length as your main engine. If you will only use it in forward, you can often get by with a shorter shaft, but measure the transom/hull distance where the kicker will be mounted.

Standard lengths include 16", 20", and 25". Your measurements should resemble one of those.

This is for a small 16' boat. Looking for a 25hp.

Edge,
It is quite likely that your motor of choice will be a motor with a 20 inch shaft.

Good luck

depends on how small and how old the boat is. there were alot of older small boats with 15" transoms.
