Merc 150XL vs. 175 ProXS opinions needed
Only have a couple days before I place my 1850LS order and I have not settled on the powerplant to push my new toy around.
I am so torn between the 150 four stroke and the 175 Proxs, I need your opinions asap please! Boat will mostly be used as a fishing craft with water sports secondary. The 175 is only $1200 more and should be worth it for low end punch? The water sports will be tubing, skiing, and my son loves to mess around on his wakeboard. I am 230, my son is 210, and my son in law is 260 so the low end punch of a two stroker is what I had in mind. I boat between elevations of 4000-8500'. Not really interested in the Verado, I just can't get over the amount of moving parts and how tough it is for a home mechanic to work on them. The extra $1200 does not bother me. I am more concerned with real life experience from you folks that have them on this boat if the 175 lives up to it's hype? I have also heard fuel consumption of the 175 is similiar to the 150 but I have a hard time believing that. |

I have a 1850 ls and if watersports are on the menu go with a 175 something, or really plan on proping down.
I always get a kick out of the "verado has so many moving parts, hard to sevice etc, etc comments" I have had a merc 150 and now a verado 175. I do all my own servicing so I spent alot of time looking under the hood of each. I have never counted the number of moving parts on each but Im sure the verado has a few more, but seriously any modern fourstroke is a complicated engine. If something fails on the water you likely are not going to fix it with a screw driver and a 1/2 inch wrench like the 1980s. They require no additional service despite all the comments that you read that they do from people who have never had one. Most engine related problems are electrical based and that will usually require a diagnostic hookup at a dealer. Verados do require a certified mechanic, around here thats not a problem, not sure about out west. The supercharger at altitude would be nice. You will enjoy the boat regardless of what you put on it. |

If money is no concern, get the 175.
I doubt anyOne that has ever owned a boat has said, " should of got the smaller engine". Many have said the opposite.

go big or go home, get the 175, then you will never regret it.

I have a Reata 1850 with a 150 Opti. Only regret, not maxing out with 175 ProXS. No question you want that with the big guys.

Thanks all you guys.
The increased hp was never an issue, I knew I wanted that. The cost is only $1200 ,which if I ever sold it, would easily be recovered. The thing that was bothering me was if the extra hp in 2 stroke was worth giving up over the 4 stroke. Any comments on the xs fuel mileage vs. the 4stroke fuel mileage? |

Problem would be solved if Merc ever came out with the long rumored 175/200 based on the 150 4 cycle.

Don't worry, just wait until the year after I buy my boat and then Merc will introduce a super sweet 175 hp 3.0 litre 4 stroke! |
