trolling question

I have a queston for you that troll. I fish lakes in my area that range from 6 feet to around 20 feet deep. I have the cranks to cover this range, and also snap weights and lead core. My queston is how "picky" do you all get with setting your lure depth. I think i get to picky with wanting to be a foot from bottom and am always in the mud or weeds. just wondering how far a fish will come for the bait so i can keep the lures in the water longer and not always cleaning them. Thanks

Walleyes will feed up so you can get away with running couple feet off bottom...more so if water is clear. If trash is a problem try a 3 way with shallow diving stick bait.

Given you have achieved the right cover / structure scenario -

(stained, cloud cover, low light morning/evening, or underwater shade) The darker the water both the shallower, slower, and further behind the boat to run your bait.

In clear water with none of the above present, the deeper (20'+), slower and more perpendicular to run the bait.

I myself try to be 2 to 4' above the depth that I'm targeting
The thought is fish will come up for a lure. They can't see a lure below them

In 20' feet of water it's easy to overlook feeding fish that may be 6-12 ft. down. Try fishing all depths and let the fish tell you where and when. For depth guidelines, get a copy of Precision Trolling. Good luck to ya.

Stay above your target and cover the entire water column(even the top 3 feet). When something starts working run them all the same like wallizz1 said. We usually keep one down in the kitchen and work various depths with the other rods. The only exact would be to stay above them. Also get the precission trolling guide. Paul
