Short Winded,
The reason that I brought up the story was to answer the question of how to get a boat on the trailer when a winch was not available.

In this case, the boat, trailer and winch were essentially derelicts. No decent rope or strap on the trailer and even then, not sure that the winch would even turn.

Put the trailer into the water deep enough so that the boat could be floated onto the trailer without the use of a winch.
