How much would you tip a guide?
Heading to Lake Erie for the first time and hired a guide. How do you tip a guide that would be satisfactory provided everything goes well? Respond or private message me please. Thanks in advance.

If the guide makes an effort to make sure that everyone enjoys their time on the water and they teach me something about fishing methods or presentation and makes an honest effort to put us on fish I tip $10. per hour we are on the water. Actually catching fish is a plus but doesn't always effect the tip.
The only time I didn't tip a guide we boated a lot of fish in 4 hours. Trouble was the guide was more interested in out fishing the 3 people he was guiding than anything else.

Doesn't the Guide's fee cover the money for the day?

In most cases (I can't speak for everyone, just myself and those I know), no, the fee doesn't include the tip. Any gesture of a tip, that shows you appreciated the experience, and had fun, goes a long way. I have been tipped as little as 20 bucks (young couple making their way in life) and as high as 300.00 ("retired" friends on an annual trip) for a 6 hour trip. Whatever you give, it will be appreciated, I'm sure. But, to answer the question....the most common is 50-100 a day.

Do captains use first mates in Great Lakes area? I know along west coast, I always tip first mate, also. Try and give them $50 for a days fishing.

For a guy working hard for you to catch fish even when the fishing is bad, no less then 20% of the cost of the charter.
Now of course that can change up or down depending on the service you receive.

Agree with you 100% REW. So if I understand this people are purchasing the guide SERVICE, and then adding an additional tip for service they purchased? I guess maybe I'm looking at it wrong. I dont tip fast food places, hair cuts, or a lot of the other B.S. places that have the option to tip when they never added any service. My feeling has always been that you tip when someone adds a service value to a good you purchase. I can see giving a tip to a guide if they did something above and beyond the guide services you purchased, or if they worked for a guide service instead of running it themseves.....so I can't say I wouldn't tip.....but I dont think it is an automatic deal to tip either. Seems like doubble dipping to me when you sell a service & then expect to get tipped for the service you sold. Last edited by Agronomist_at_ia; 03-26-2017 at 04:39 PM. |
