Hanging out at the fishing hole :)
Been hanging out at the local fishing hole the last 6 years or so. Still catching lots of crappie and relaxing enjoying my retirement.

You can call it beating a dead horse all you want, but my old hand held Lowrance H2O GPS kicks all kinds of butt over my fancy dance 50 channel HB 597 HD CI at low speeds, and I don't like it one bit.
If HB doesn't do something about it the unit will be going bye bye. |

I wonder if it is model specific on the HB units. I have several friends who have high end HB units that can easily track trolling speed, or drifting speeds of .2 or .3 mph with no problems at all.
Take care REW |

It is not the track that is not working. It is the directional arrow in question. At speeds of less than .5 the gps can not reliably say the direction your boat is pointing. It can however note the path your boat is moving on. Bob

Ozark,
Why do you really care. Can't you glance at your on board compass to give you the direction that your boat is pointing? You do have a compass mounted on the dash don't you? REW |

Why care, I know when I spend money on anything I expect it to work properly...

There is no problem that can't be fixed with lots more money. If you want survery grade gps then buy one and stop complaining about this donut thing boys.
It's not Johnson's fault you don't have an engineering education and are not capable of understanding the limitations of these GPS units. I know exactly what you want and you won't get satisfaction on any GPS that sells for less than 10 grand. Shellback. These guys just don't get it. They don't have a clue about what the accuracy limitations of GPS units. They simply want it to tell them within and accuracy of 2 cm and don't undertand that it's not accurate like that. Accuracy of 3 meters plus or minus goes right over their pretty little heads. You can't fix CLUELESS! Last edited by Moose1am; 12-11-2011 at 08:47 PM. |

When I had the LGC2000 antenna on my 2 HDS 10s the directional icon would jump all around. The LGC 4000 corrected all of that. The internal antennas in the HDS units are the same as the 2000. 1 time per second. The 4000 is 5 times. I had a Lowrance engineer I fish with say the processor in the HB units is not big enough to fix the donut,if it was they would have fixed it with a software update.

So why does the tech spec on the Lowrance GPS system still claim an accuracy of only 3 meters ?
It's not the processor that's the problem. It's the accuracy of the GPS system. You can't expect a GPS system that only accurate to ten feet to see you moving 2 ft per second. It's not possible. Your error in the GPS readings could have your unit showing you moving ten feet in another direction when your boat is anchored. And then the next few readings could be ten feet off the other way. How do you correct for this if your boat is not moving? You can't and neither can Lowrance. If your only moving a short distance it can't tell that you moved vs if the error made it appear that you moved. Only after you have moved more than ten feet or farther than the error range will the gps know that you move and which way you are going. It takes time to figure this out. BTW the Humminbird 50 channel GPS antenna updates 4 times a second. This also can be fixed to a degree by installing an electronic compass on the GPS unit. My Garmin eTrex Vista does that. But the map page still jumps around when I go too slow. Especially when I set the Vista to track up view. The Vista knows which way the GPS is pointing, but it can't tell which way I am moving unless I move far enough at a good speed. It's most accurate when I am moving over 10 mph by default. This setting can be changed by the user. When you go faster you move farther and your distance moved far exceed the error range of these units then the error becomes less important. But if you don't move far then the error is greater than the distance you just moved. Go slow at your own peril. Want to get better accuracy and reduce the amount of error in your GPS unit? Spend more money on a survey grade GPS unit and stop blaming humminbird for things that they can't control at the price you willing to pay for these units. Things in life cost money and there not free. I wish they were but that's not the way things work. Quote:
