Default Power steering pump

Has anyone put some sort of bypass switch on a power steering pump for kicker motor? I have a 300 verado and 15 kicker, I was told to do such a thing because using the kicker will drain the start battery over time pulling cranks.

Cgreen,
Rather than doing anything with the big motor, just shut down the big motor when using the kicker.

Then, install either a stick steering system on the kicker or an electric steering system on the kicker.

Both of these options do a much better job of steering the boat at low speed than twisting the main steering wheel.

With the stick steering system, push forward and full lock in one direction. Pull the stick back and full lock in the opposite direction. No need to turn the main steering wheel or the main motor.

One of the electric steering system can be used on the kicker with a lanyard around your neck holding the remote steering box so that you can steer the boat from anywhere in the boat.

Mercury has a "fix" for this that includes installing a second battery and an electrical kit.

Many and likely most Verado guys, use the bow mount for steering when running the kicker if the kicker is tied to the big motor. The pump on the Verados use a lot of juice. Steering with the bow mount works very well and if you have a Terrova or xi5 you can use some of the features for trolling passes.
