Muskie Fishing English River below Manitou Falls

Has anyone ever targeted muskie on this section of river? I stayed at Knotty Pines on Wegg Lake last week and casted for a few hours every evening and never even had a follow. I know they are in there because someone caught a 52" the week before when casting for northerns. I am planning on heading back next year on opener again and giving it more of an effort. Just was wondering what areas people normally find fish up there. We mostly targeted points and islands and a few shallow shorelines.

I fished there two weeks in the last four years. I only saw one fish in that time, but it was a giant. They are in there, but I don't think great numbers. I think they average quite large. I saw my giant in lower Wilcox at a creek mouth with classic weed rock combo.

But if you hold em like that it's a lot harder to get that angle 2.5ft out from your body like the pics above.

And if you don't hold them that way, you are probably killing the big fish. I suppose if a picture is more important than the fish, people can go ahead and go for the big shot and kill the fish.

I wasn't trying to pick on you, just trying to say how important it was to hold the fish properly. I discussed this personally with a fisheries biologist who autopsied every dead Muskie he found or was alerted to. The vetebra separate as they are not designed to support weight in that direction. He found a huge number of dead Muskie had that separation. The fish in this post probably died. A lot of people pay lip service to catch and release and kill the fish anyway, just like fishing walleye in deep water.

This is a 46" Muskie that was successfully released the last week of August 2016. It was caught near the large island on the South side Wegg lake on the far west side of the lake before you go into the river. This is the second time someone in our group has caught a Muskie in 20+ years of fishing here. Mostly caught while walleye fishing, but we have the right equipment to safely land a giant fish. The other one was a 48" caught about 5 years ago near the outpost cabin.
