gel batteries
I just bought two 12V deep cycle group 31 gel batteries at Fleet Farm. I have a Guest dual 10 amp three stage (model 2620 from year 2004).
Manual says it's good for gels, but manual also suggests it charges at anywhere from 14-14.5V during 2nd stage. My new gel battery (East Penn manf'd) manual says never go over 14.1V. So... I don't want to ruin >$300 worth of new gels, so is my older Guest charger OK to use with my gels? Anyone using a 2003-2005 Guest charger on gels with success? Thanks! |

Take the gells back and buy AGMs. The AGMs are not nearly as fussy!! Wiredog

An automatic charger (the only way to go anyway) is not going to care whether the gels are "fussy" or not. I'm simply wondering if I need a new automatic charger or not. |

Alot of automatic chargers are OK for wets and AGM's, but push a bit too hard for Gels. I think Wiredog only meant that Gels are less forgiving than AGM's or Wets.
I personally think you should contact Guest directly and ask them if the charging profile on that particular charger will cook those Gel cells. Gels can be fantastic batteries if taken care of correctly (as you already know). They just sometimes get a bad rap from people that have failures because they wreck them due to improper charging profiles. Guest will tell you... |

I figured if someone here on this site had been running gels on an older 2620 (a really common charger) with good results then I wouldn't worry about hearing back from Guest. |

I have a older 2623 charge pro which I have been charging 3 gel batteries for the last 2 seasons & going on 3 without a problem.

It sounds like you are committed to the gel batteries, so here's what I'd do: run a charge cycle and monitor the actual voltage during the adsorption phase. If it does not exceed the 14.1V max spec, then use your old 2620. Given the size of your batteries, it's more likely that will be true. If it charges at a higher voltage, then respect the battery specs and buy a different charger. Last edited by yarcraft91; 04-19-2011 at 05:25 AM. |

Here is the spec for the current Guest charger:
http://www.marinco.com/files/support...s/2620A_08.pdf I suspect that you have the 2620 charger, not the 2620A charger. I think you might be wise to call Guest and ask the cost to upgrade your charger from the current 2620, to the 2620A model, with the different voltage output - for charge and float. Take care REW p.s. Here is a "contact" page to contact guest: http://www.marinco.com/contact |
