What did you catch early??? If you are going to do the work yourself i think fiber reeds and a gasket are about$200. Wiredog

Caught them cracked not shattered in little bits being sucked up into the intake.

I had all the reeds, and fuel lines components, replaced in my '01 150hp Optimax last summer and the total bill was right around $1000. Without pulling out the bill I believe $800 of the cost was parts.

How does a guy catch this before the engine breaks one of the reeds off and sucks in? Is there a suggested number of hours where they should be replaced? I have a 2005 225 Opti with about 190 hours on it abd this is the one thing I've found myself thinking about on multiple occasions.

You can`t for certain. But a sign is your motor having an intermittent miss at low rpms or rough idle. My 03 225 Opti has 115 hrs on it and i am going to replace mine just because if the steel ones do go so goes the motor. Wiredog
