Default Yamaha's Two Stroke HPDI are they on par with etec and optimax?

I was curious if they are as good with fuel and also as quiet? Are they on the same level of technology? Thanks, J

Default I think they are

I have a 175 Yamaha Vmax HPDI, and it is a very strong and reliable motor. Look up bulletproof in the dictionary, this motor is used as an example.

I have to agree with the comment on oil consumption. I use approximately 1 gallon of oil for every two full tanks of gas. 42 gallon tank. Right about 50 to 1. Not a big deal to me. 2 full tanks of gas is a lot of running time.

I would not hesitate to buy a boat with an HPDI hanging on the back. In fact, it would be a selling point for me. The oil use is trivial compared to a power head failure or other annoying issues.

Loud? Yeah, it growls that's for sure at high RPMs. I am used to it, doesn't bother me. It may seem loud to someone used to a 4 stroke or quiet 2 stroke.

Not saying there aren't other reliable motors out there, there certainly are, but the 175 HPDI that I have has been outstanding.

Greg not sure your numbers are right. 1 gallon of oil for 2 tanks (42each) is 84/1 ratio. That is way below normal oil consumption IMO.

IMHO Yammi was the one who got it right the first time with that type engine technology.... I know merc got right after 04' I think. Not so sure on the E-tec's...

Yamaha invented a Variable oil injection system 30yrs ago, its on the Sleds and outboards, 50:1 during hard use, 100:1 when lighter RPMs......makes sense....HPDI, Opti, Etec, all have that, however the HPDI did not come without its share of issues....Thats why theirs a Series 1 and Series 2, series 2 was still clunky and loud compared to a HO

A guy named MERC favors mercury, imagine. HPDI has been around, it is a very proven technology. If you are a doughter take a look at southern use (where they really use motors especially in southern salt) and ya all will see 100 Yams per Merc -- both 2 and 4 stroke. Yes HPDI had problems, but they're gone! Remember any Optis blowin up? Etec isn't even in the game- not enough sold to worry about (take a look at resale)

Actually, variable oil injection appeared in the early 60's

The 250 HPDI is a notoriously trouble prone motor. Many powerhead troubles and many of the ones still running have been modified to used absurd amounts of oil.

The 200 and smaller are far better motors. I will say that most of the guys I know who own one had some trouble with them at first and once the kinks were worked out, they have been very dependable.
