Default Spreedy sleeves

Having a problem keeping the grease seals in two of my wheels on my Shoreland'r tandem trailer. I bought new speedy sleeves and seals right from Shoreland'r as the old ones had slight imperfections that I thought may be causing the problem. My question is, can I/should I apply loc-tite to the speedy sleeve to adhere it to the spindle. I did do this to one of the spindles last year as the speedy sleeve on one of them was moving around pretty freely. I don't know how easy that is going to come off to put the new one on but I will find out later today when I attempt this project.

By the way, I was only getting 300 miles out a seal before the grease started to seep out.

Default sleeves

I installed a set of sleeves when I went to the gear lubed spindles. If memory serves me right, the instructions said to use a Loc-tite to secure the sleeves. The key here is to have all the old loc-tite, grease, oil and any other contaminate removed before installing the new sleeves. I used either lacquer thinner or acetone to final clean the mating surfaces before the loc-tite- - jerr

Default Use aviation sealant

Put many hundreds of speedi sleeves on as a HD tech, front and rear crank, and axles. Clean sleaves surface so no sealant or rust remain, brake clean the entire surface, use this adhesive and install the speedi sleeve, it retains it and won't allow oil/grease to get under it and Its decent to remove to install another sleeve down the road if needed.

However if there are deep grooves worn in sometimes the speedi sleeve just crushes down into the deep seal worn grooves and doesn't work and requires a part replacement rather than refurbishment.

And it's spelled speedi sleeve.

you could also try out the loctite 680 which is made for bearings.

I tackled it today. The old sleeves came off pretty easy with only having to heat one with a propane torch. Looks like they had been fastened with loctite or a similar product. Cleaned up the spindles and gave the new sleeves a few spots of loctite red and they were good to go.

You may want to back off on the amount of grease you are putting.

If you are not losing grease out the back of your wheels, you should seldom have to add any grease to your seals. If the grease is not leaving the wheel, when you add grease, the only thing that you are doing is to put unnecessary pressure on the seal which will cause premature failure.

Generally a shot or two of grease once every few months is all that is required for the typical wheel.

I have a utility trailer that I purchased 10 years ago - which never goes into the water and I have never serviced the bearings and have had no issues at all.

If you think about auto wheel bearings, the bearings are packed installed and seldom serviced for the next 10 years or 100000 miles. The difference of course is the immersion that boat trailers are subject to and thus have different requirements.

Good luck

typically they are only needed for damaged (grooved) spindles.

If the sealing surface of your spindle, where the inner grease seal rides on, it smooth then you dont need them
