Default Triton 189

I have a 2000 Triton 189, 175hp Mercury EFI, running a 21p tempest right now.
Running 5600-5700rpm. Motor is in 2nd hole

I've read every post I could find on the early 189s. I have seen several people have used a 23p high 5 with success. Ive got one I am trying, but I get way too many rpms, took it up to 5800rpm @ 54 mph and still had throttle left.

If anyone is still running an 189, or remembers, what hole was your motor in? Any opinions on why I can turn so many rpms with this prop, and why my slip is so great.

Thanks

I run a 205, but they are the same hull just longer. Stock props are not very accurate. Or your prop may have been worked on and changed. You could try a 25 pitch. But my favorite prop on my 205 is a Trophy plus. Try a 23pitch Trophy 4 blade. I also run a 25 high5 but they are a pig when it comes to backing up. Wiredog

Do you run a large hub trophy or small hub? With or without a cavataion ring?

Thanks

I have a 2005 198 with a 200 Opti, It likely has many similar characteristics as your 189. I found a Merc Rev 4 19P to be the best overall performer, good hole shot, great cornering and minimal top end loss.

BTW, If you have porpoising issues, a lot of bow lift on the hole shot or trouble staying on plane at low speeds a Cobra Edge Hydrofoil works wonders to correct these issues. By far the best $100 I ever spent on a boat accessory, I was hard getting by drilling holes in the motor cavitation plate but turned out to be well worth it.

I was looking at the edge fin today. I currently have an se sport 300.

The boat works perfect with 1/2-3/4 tank of fuel and 4 adults in it. Decent holeshot, good handling, and 54mph @5500.

Two people, less than 1/2 tank= about the same holeshot, 54mph @5900

Acts the same way with a 21p tempest, 23p high 5, 23p trophy. 23p tempest i get 55@5200 rpm with just me in it.

Acts like it slips alot when im running light.

That may be an indicator that you have too much stern lift. Better minds than mine should have good advice for you.
Good luck!

If you can run mid 50s with a 175 thats about all your gonna get out of it. You might get a couple mph more with a six inch jack plate. Also where are your trolling motor batteries located and how many? Also what do you have for a bow mount motor? Wiredog

2 trolling motor batteries in the back by main battery are 29 series. Trolling motor on front is a 60" 80lb motorguide Xi5.

Seems like 52-54 is the sweet spot. Smooth and stable. Loaded, Im very pleased. Just puzzled why it runs worse with 2 guys.

Thanks for all the input.
