20 hour check
I have a new 175 Verado, they told me the same thing and I can't find anything in the book. I'm a long way from where I bought it and they know I'm not having it serviced there so there is probably something to it.

new 150 opti last year, I brought it in for a minor issue regarding the boat and asked if there was anything the opti needed and they said unless it's not broke than go fishing, other than proper break in check the plugs and your fine.

20 hour check
Twenty hours of run time doesn't seem like enough hours for a first time check. Ask them were in the manual it shows that.
E-mail Mercury and ask them what they recommend. |

Changing the oil on the lower units of new motors may not be a bad idea. In case thereare any metal chips left over from manufacturing the motor. I have always changed the oil(first change) before it was due when I purchased a new car. Seems like cheap insurance.

100 hour checkup maybe but a 20 hour? No thanks unless it's free. You can change the lower unit lube in less than an hour for under $15.

If Mercury waits a 20 hour oil change they should put an hour meter on each motor.
I have a 2010 75 HP 4S, the dealer also told me I should have a 20 hour and a 50 hour check and oil change. I can see checking nuts etc but 20 hours it not much time on oil. I Change mine each year around Jan-Feb. But I also use it year around, just not a lot. This last time I had 2 years on the motor and had the dealer pull the hours and only had 56 hours. You learn by your mistakes, IF I ever buy another new mercury it will have the smart gauges or interface to an fishfinder. By the way, the 20 hour oil change is not in the mercury book that came with the motor |

I would be a little leary of this dealer if they are trying to scam you on something like that? Maybe ask him next time where it says this in the manual? Email Merc and see what they say? Like it was said, Very little time and money to drain the lower unit yourself..........My boat just went back for the first time after 3 years for the check on the etec. Plugs, fuel filter changed and computer updated for $120!! I am very pleased with my dealer!!! They can make all the difference in the world, regardless of brand!!!
