Default Staying on the Mature Walleye Schools

Fishing Lake Ontario and St Lawrence River areas has some big schools of very big mature walleyes. I'm wondering what strategies people use to stay on the schools as they move around? How do you best go about finding the next structure/area that the walleye have moved to once they have moved on from an area?

We were on them recently on some of the lake shoals but they have moved on and haven't been able to track them down in any numbers again. The schools I am wondering about are not the ones that move up into the Bay of Quinte - am further east than those.

Catch one and put a radio tracker on it.

a cheaper alternative would be to catch a mature fish and tie some fishing line and a balloon to it, preferably something flashy or something with lights on it. Let said mature fish go and the next time your our just look for the balloon and you have located the mature fish again.

In years past, that is exactly what some old timers did when fishing.

i.e. string a fish with a balloon to keep track of its mates.

Be safe

the key would be identifying where their end location is and connecting the dots between. finding structure in between the two spots.

I feel that most walleye from Kingston west go to bay of Quinte in fall. if you are in the River than its going to be much harder as they are probably scattered and roaming.

Thanks for the insight. We have been fishing the river and have been able to find get some action following that thought process but it does seem they are scattered a bit. Most obvious structure seems to be producing a but not the heavy action earlier this year.
