Gulf Shore/Pier Fishing
I'll be spending January and February in Gulf Shores Alabama. Have any of you done any shore/pier fishing in that area? I don't want to haul a boat down there. Any information or tips would be welcome. Feel free to PM also. Thanks

We will be down there for February also. It will be our 3rd year there. There is a large public pier there that you can use for a fee. The water has been too cold the last 2 years for any good fishing. This the best site for info on the pier fishing. Register as user to get fishing reports.
http://www.gulfshorespierfishing.com/forum.php? I took fishing gear down the first year but never used it. This store has everything you might need. http://www.jmtackle.com/ Naval Aviation Museum http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/ is a must. If you want to buy fresh seafood, this is the place. http://www.joepattis.com/Joe-Pattis-...ny-Welcome.cfm The Roadkill Cafe in Elberta, Al is great for basic southern meal. We like it better than Lamberts in Foley. Mikes has daily specials at great prices. Lots of Madri Gras parades in February. http://themobilemask.com/Parade_Schedule.html Weather can be cool in January and February. Not as warm as some of the other snowbird areas. We do like it better than RGV(Texas). Condo on the beach is very reasonable. PM me if you need more info. Last edited by todalake; 10-04-2016 at 06:41 PM. |

I'm not a beach sun worshipper but do enjoy the milder weather and just hanging out and getting away from the great white north. Walking the dog, riding my bicycle, playing a little golf, trying a little fishing, and eating shrimp till I'm sick is my plan. I'll try the Roadkill as I like Lamberts and try your seafood place. I've been getting it Billys right at the dock. really looking forward to being there and having the time to really enjoy myself. appreciate the advice very much. |

Last Feb we stayed a week in Winter Haven, Fl and took a ride to the Tampa fishing pier to fish off of it. Over $40 later we caught a few fish that looked like bluegills/sunfish and were the size of sunfish. It was a huge disappoint IMHO.
So, my recommendation is don't get too exited and jump in with both feet, but rather just walk the pier and see if it's really worth renting the gear and buying the bait. I know I wish I had. Then this August we spent some time in Virginia Beach and did just that, walked the pier without renting any gear. That pier was DISGUSTING ! ! ! Whoever design that pier should be shot......they have a wooden railing all the way around with a 2x6 laying flat where everyone cuts up their bait to fish with. Needless to say is STUNK of rotten fish all the way around that pier. Nobody was catching anything and we couldn't wait to get off this stinking open trash can of a pier in near 100 degree weather. BTW these piers don't attract the best clientele in anglers........... Bob

From the posts I've seen most of the fishermen at the pier are retired snowbirds from up north and pretty friendly. Most are regulars there everyday, no different than up north meeting in coffee shop in the morning. A box of doughnuts will get you lets of help.

OK, let me know how that works out for you. From my actual experience, most of the fishermen on these piers didn't even speak English..........don't think any were snowbirds from up north, except for this fool...........LOL

While visiting my brother near Tampa I took stroll out on a pier and found three snowbirds from MN. The coffee shop comparison was what I witnessed, on an obvious limited sample.

Here's another good link with some pictures and videos of Gulf Shores Pier.
https://www.facebook.com/GulfShoresPierFishing/ More snowbird anglers there than locals. You have to remember where the pier is. Between Gulf Shore, Al and Orange Beach, Al. For every Alabama license plate in parking lot, there are 5 from north of Mason-Dixon line. 50 miles from nearest big city. Thousands of condos which fill up with snowbirds. January and February is low season there. Fully furnished 2 bedroom condos on the beach for $1000-$1500/month. Fully furnished 1 bedroom condo not on the beach <$900. |
