RE: Here's the story
When I posted this , I wasn't looking for support . I only wanted to warn people who thought they could get away with a fifth fish .
I hold no ill will toward the fine man of our D.N.R ! I'm glad we have them also . It was kinda like walleye express said .What is worse , I don't like to eat them , but the guys I was with do . Next : I see posting from Charter Caps. on this topic . We are armed with cell phones & phone numbers for the game wardens in this area . We have been asked for 2 years now to start turning the guys cleaning over limits and too small fish on thier boat before they come in . They know it's happening . They've been hearing the stories for sometime , but no one bothers to find out who's on the boat . There's no bigger group of meat hunters then the "six packer" . No one really eats those Smallmouth . You just have to have a cooler full of fish to show off . RELEASE A FIGHTER ! Eat them nasty walleyes. P.S. I'm not blind ! I see the guys running back & forth ,( acrossed the ice ),taking fish in . |

RE: Here's the story
Erie Fisherman, I am a Charter Captain on Erie. What is the difference if I take 6 guys out and catch a limit compared to a guy that has his own boat out with 5 other friends? We offer a service for guys that do not have boats or are to far away to tow their boats to Erie. I for one know the rules and Regs. for Erie.I have never brought in more fish then I was allowed for a 6 man trip.I would be crazy to knowingly come in with a over limit .I am pretty sure that if I did and was caught doing so ,my Ohio Guide License would be pulled from me and therefore I would not be allowed to run Charters. As far as undersized fish being caught, Ohio does not have a legel lenght limit.I don`t want this topic to get switched over to Charter Captains who run legitimate businesses just because you and your group got caught do something illegel.

RE: Here's the story
I caught 30 fish myself Friday but took home 4. I have to believe I had as much or more fun than these guys that got pinched. I am not going to say I am without sin but I do not bring more fish home than I am allowed. I took Erie Fisherman's warning post as a heads up for all fellow poachers and frankly I'm a bit offended by it.
I don't want to hear about yellow and red lights....they have nothing more in common with game laws than they do homicide or robbery laws. That's like telling a jury to think about that red light they ran 5 years ago before sentencing me to life for murder. This sort of thing is what makes people lump all sportsmen into one group when the DOW pulls the trigger on a sting operation to bust a poaching ring as they have in the past couple years. I have had people say they are surprised they didn't see my name in the paper simply because I am an outdoorsman. I couldn't believe it the first time I was asked, but after that I started telling them how surprised I am that their names are not in the blotter for solicitation or DUI because they have the proper anatomy or they drink. Daily bag limits are simple law and it's all simple pre-school math. One....two....three....four. Done. By the way....I may be one of the guys you see running back and forth. I ran to the beach twice Friday to pick up friends I called so they could get in on the bite after work.....and although this may be hard for somebody who overbags to understand, each time I went to the beach I left my fish laying on the ice by my holes. I'm really not trying to be a hard a$$ here. What really pissed me off is your attempt to justify your actions by sighting charter captains for doing what the law allows (remember that one...two....three...etc??) on a message board. I'm sorry but I feel no empathy for you. I sincerely hopw this incident will result in you being a bit more upstanding and accountable in the future. |

RE: Here's the story
Erie Fishermen, I came down hard on you yesterday when I heard you're warning. I still feel that you got what you deserved. I can understand the temptation when the bite is on. However, wrong is wrong! Learn you're lesson and don't do it again. I could never do something like overbagging fish or poaching a deer and feel right. I guess we're all different. |

RE: Here's the story
I have no sympathy on this one. Too many times I have sat in a river fishing for salmon with 10# line and a single hook and had to watch guys with double treble hooks attached to a hunk of lead snagging fish. I got my reward for being an ethical fisherman when I saw a group of these yahoos get popped by the Michigan DNR after the officers watched them snag fish for 30+minutes. These guys even had the guts to argue with the officers.
It is a chance you take when you break the law and eventually it will catch up with you. I believe the laws are there to preserve fishing for future generations and the more people that ignore the laws the less likely our fisheries will be there. Take your limit and come back another day!! |

RE: Here's the story
I agree with you regarding the 6-pack promotional picture. Remember the promo. pics. of the giant smallmouths? Pics. of 6-pack limits showing dead and foul tasting fish? Where are they today? The same place that the numbers of giant smallmouth are at-gone. A tragedy that is legal and considered ethical, not to mention counterproductive in the long run.

RE: Here's the story
I CAN TELL THE CABIN FEVER HAS SET IN. I FEEL THAT IF YOU KNOWINGLY TOOK FISH OVER YOUR LIMIT, AND 8 OVER IS A DRAMATIC NUMBER, THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO SUSPEND YOUR LICENCE. #####, YOU CANT EVEN GET A FISHING LICENCE IF YOUR A DEAD BEAT DAD, YET, YOU STILL HAVE A LICENCE AND YOUR GEAR! PROBLY MINUS A FEW BUCKS, BUT YOUR STILL FREE TO DO IT AGAIN, IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMON SENSE YOU WONT, BUT ANY ONE WHO KEEPS 8 OVER WAS SHORT CHANGED ON THAT ITEM. I GUESS MY QUESTION WOULD BE ARE YOU IGNORANT, NOT TO BRIGHT OR DID SOME ONE TELL YOU THE EYE'S WERE LEAVING FOR CANADA MONDAY AND WOULDNT BE BACK?????????TIGHT LINES AND MAY HIGH TEMPERATURES, COMMON SENSE AND LIGHT WEST WINDS PREVAIL!!!!!!! EYE PROBLEM (P.S. IF I HAD THAT HAPPEN TO ME, I WOULD HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE GRAVE WITH ME AND NOT POSTED ON THIS BOARD)

RE: Here's the story
Not that it would solve this problem but if a no cull law were in place, which I fully support, this would reduce the number of over limit fish taken. You say one fish had to be kept because it was a bleeder. If you only had three on the ice by then, then keeping the "bleeder" would be no problem. Once you have your limit, you quit fishing. If you want to go for a trophy, keep one short of the limit until you get the trophy fish you're after. Yeah, it's a crap shoot, but one I believe in. I'm no saint but when it comes to the fish and game laws, I have no respect for those that abuse them. Wheter it's one or one hundred over the limit, they should throw the book at you and revoke all fishing and hunting priveleges for life. Ignorance is no excuse. O.K. I'm through. (I must need another cup of coffee)

RE: Here's the story
Erie Fisherman, you must have 'nads the size of basketballs to post something like this on WC. Let me get this straight - you knowingly violated a game law, you got caught (thank God),and post your story here to warn us in the event that we are contemplating the same? Moreover, you've equated poaching to running a yellow light?
I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that 99% of the WC regulars have the utmost respect for game laws and conservation in general. While I guess we should be thankful for your "warning", most of us don't need it. Try www.willfulpoaching.com for your next post. |

RE: Here's the story
eyedoktr,
I have tried to stay out of this discussion so far. But I'm glad that you made the point of only keeping 3 fish or one under your limit on the ice. We fished out of camp perry Sat. and by 1 o'clock the six of us had caught 87 fish, notice to all I said caught 87 not kept we kept our 24. We only kept the bigger females for guys in the group that wanted to mount them. I had seven fish that I kept Fri & Sat. and only one was a female. I firmly believe in slot limits and although it isn't the law I practice it myself. In my opinion the smaller males are better eaters anyway. To everyone else I think we have kicked this dead horse long enough. Lets talk fishin. |
