I worked part time on a worm farm in 1976 and 1977. The worm farm was a lot of 4 foot by 8 foot beds formed with 2X10 lumber. Way back then the guy that owned the farm cleared $250k per year. I have no idea of how much money that would be today.

The worm beds were filled with a combination of shredded cardboard and newspaper. We put bone meal on top of the beds once per week for food. this was in Las Vegas so imagine what i describe for working conditions in the summer in Las Vegas. The worm beds were covered by a roof and my buddy Ray and I worked outside in the sun.

We would take a flatbed trailer around stores and load bales of compressed cardboard on the trailer and bring it back to the farm. We the used a rolling mill mounted to a farm tractor by PTO to shred the cardboard. One of us would tear the cardboard to a size that would fit into the rolling mill and the other feed it into the mill. Think wood chipper for cardboard. The shredded cardboard would dump into plastic bags that would be stacked for later use.

We would turn each bed over once per week with pitchforks. One day each month we would take 25% of the beds rotated and harvest the crawlers. Using a metal mesh screen we would sort the crawlers. The large ones would go into styrofoam containers that would be picked up by the bait company. The bedding that was full of worm castings by that time was piled up and sold for a lot of money as fertilizer. The smaller worms were put into new bedding. The beds were sprayed with water daily to stay moist.

Worst job in the world. Summer in Las Vegas working that rolling mill. We made a lot of money at the time though and for a part time job to supplement what I made it was pretty good.

Probably way more information on worm farming than anyone wanted to read but it is a subject I am very familiar with.

Heck no! Very interesting, and much appreciated!

Do you know why that worm farm was set up in Las Vegas, of all places? Was that an especially good climate for the endeavor (whereas I would have thought it gets too hot and dry there), or did it just happen to be where the guy who owned the business preferred to live, or what?

The guy that owned it had owned a speed shop previously. He sold the speed shop and started the worm farm in his back yard. He said more money and less work for him. No reason for Las Vegas beyond that was where he lived.
