Default Ecoboost vs 5.0L

Looking at buying a new or newer F-150 and wondering what you guys are really getting for tow mileage for the 5.0 and for the Ecoboost. I towed my boat once with a Ecoboost supercrew and got 14 on the freeway. How are the 5.0s doing?

2013 Eco supercrew F150. Pulled a 620 Ranger to Eagle Lake, Ontario from the Twin Cities. 14.8mpg round trip. 3.55 Gears and all the power I need. We were running pretty much right at the speed limits or just under, even on the Interstate. Yes, it is without the "muscle" sound of a v-8, but I have a bike with loud pipes when I need noise.

2014 Ecoboost 3.55 gears. 14-15mpg pulling my boat (4k) around 70mph. Pulling my 7x14 enclosed loaded light at interstate speeds of 85-90mph and I got around 8mpg. Empty hwy I average right about 19mpg.

Power is NEVER an issue though.

My buddy seems to get roughly the same with his 5 liter. You gotta spin the v8 to about 5k before it comes into the power band though. The eco only has to get to about 2400rpm before its at peak torque.

I love my eco but dont let the name fool you. There is nothing more eco about it than the 5.0 coyote motor.

My son and I both bought 2014 F150's. Same truck except mine is Eco Boost and his is the 5. I must admit overall I am disappointed in the mileage but love the boost when pulling the boat. I find my truck to be VERY wind sensitive. Going to Iowa a few weeks ago into a strong wind I only got about 10mpg and was not pulling anything. Best ever got was 19 with a strong tail wind. I don't pull my boat much more than two hours for my outings. Next Ford I get will be the 5 and not Eco. I don't dislike it but my son gets 3 - 5 mpg more than I do and we both drive the same way. Good luck. The new 2015 is really sweet.

I have a 2012 with a 5.0 that I bought dec of 2012. I have put 43,000 miles on it and its been a treat for every one of them. Great mileage and never need more power. I wanted an eco when I went to the dealer but found better deals on the 5.0 with rebates so I went for it. Glad I did after seeing the mileage that some of my co workers get with their ecos. I average 19.5 mpg. I was getting 13mpg pulling a fully loaded 1800 lund prov with a 175 on the back, dual console, ect. On long highway trips I get 21-22mpg not pulling anything.

Towing my 620 I get 9-11mpg with a 2013 eco. Like others have said, it is very wind sensitive. Definitely a bit disappointed in the towing mileage, but a great truck overall.

I get 12 towing and 19 not towing with the ecoboost. I didn't anticipate much better mileage than the 5.4 F150 it replaced. What I wanted was more grunt and less downshifting when towing the boat or our camper. Mine is a max tow with 3.73 gears.

I am pleased with it. It pulls mightily and is less thirsty than the 5.4 I had. But if you are after mileage, I don't think the ecoboost will save you enough to pay for the upgrade costs over the 5.0. But if you want more grunt, its got it.

I have a 12 with a 5.0 3:73 gears, I get pulling my pro v 1900 on tandem trailer an average of 15.5- 16 and non pulling on the highway 21. That's at the pump not the on board average.

Default Love it

I have a 2012 with the ECO and 3.73 gears. Pulling my 619 I get around 13-14 mpg. Plenty of power and I love the posi lock feature. As of today I have not had a recall yet. I Have over 55,000 on it. no load I get around 19 mpg.
Very happy with the truck and the power the ECO creates. Below zero temps I get 13-14 mpg ( doesn't like cold )
