Default cranking shallow

While cranking shallow 2' to 6' with boards what is the rule of thumb for how much line you let out? Can you figure 1' of depth to every 5' of line behind the board for a shallow running crank and will the board scare the fish when running it shallow 10' to 20' behind the board. Never tried it but would think it would work great for them shallow eyes.

Default RE: cranking shallow

I prefer, when fishing that shallow, to run a deep diver, believe it or not. I have caught many a fish with just 5'-7' of line out behind the board with a #7 shadrap.A bouncer and spinner also works great in those situations.Yes, hooked short to the board. No guessing then.
