Recarpeting my boat
I have been doing lots of searching on this website about re-carpeting boats. I am going to do mine soon and want to know if I need to seal the wood?? The wood is not rotten but the carpet has stains that I cant stand looking at anymore and I cannot scrub clean.
Is sealing the wood before re-carpeting a waste of money or good insurance?? |

I would seal the wood if I were re-carpeting,...
It is relativity cheap and easy as long as your already tearing things apart,........ |

All you have to do is pick up a can or two of fiberglass resin, mix according to the instructions, and paint it on the wood. You should probably make sure it's bone dry before you seal it, though. I guess I'd say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". But if the deck boards are dry it won't hurt anything to seal them first and it may help the decks last longer depending on how you store the boat.

If you find any wood at all that is stained or separating swap it out. My buddy did his and said its not bad, 2 years later it got spongey. I ended up ordering marine 1" plywood and helped him do it right. We even enlarged the rear platform in the low w aluminum C channel and the boat is better than ever.........its a pain to do but worth it. use good carpet and good adhesive

i would recommend using a good sealer on the wood. but i dont really know what you should use. but some type of polyuathane or something. you might ask at a couple of marinas. i had to put a new floor in my boat. i sealed all my wood with the paint on truck bed liner stuff. but i cant really tell you if it worked yet. i,ve only had it in about 3 or 4 yrs.
i bought my carpet and glue from cabelas to do my boat. you could check them out and see if they carry a good wood sealer. they do have some good prices on marine grade carpet. sherman |

You really do not want to use fiberglass resin to seal wood as resins will absorb water over time. Polyurethanes will crack in the situation under the carpeting it does not contract and expand with out cracking. If you are going to seal it use an epoxy coating Google rotdoctor.com I have used there products and they are very good and helpful if needed.
To learn everything you ever wanted to know about replacing boat carpet go to bassboatcentral.com and under forums there is bassboat restoration, there are guys on there that have done some amazing repairs, and give you good products to remove your old carpet and how to install.. |

I used to have my shop class re-deck and recarpet boats.. We used a 50/50 spar varnish. Half thinner half varnish. Then when dry a good coat of spar varnish. Poly isn't bad but spar varnish is made for boats exterior. Then a good exterior glue for the carpet. One thing I found out was that rear deck corners seemed to rot while the rest of the deck was just fine. Really have to look close and take your time. We used the old carpet as a template for the new piece of carpet just cutting it a bit oversized.
