So REW you " have followed trailers where the tires were so out of balance that the tires were bouncing off of the road.

Then, after balancing, the tires were rolling smooth as silk. "

If you were Pinocchio your nose would be hitting me here up in Canada.

Darren,
Sorry to be a misbeliever.

The trailers that I was referring to, were fishing buddies and I noticed the bouncing tires following them on a fishing trip.

I would ask them if they had had the trailer tires balanced. After replying no, I suggested that they have the tires balanced.

After balancing, I was again following the boat and could see no observable bounce of the tires or trailer.

Good luck and may your way always be smooth and you may you never find rough water or bad winds in your face.

Here is a video for Centamatic Automatic wheel balancer. Notice even a severely out of balance wheel would not bounce the trailer off the road. And the wheel in the video has no weight on it unlike a trailer that even empty has the weight of the trailer on it.

Here is a link to Centramatic if anyone is interested.

Good video.

Another from Truck-U about trailer tires.
Max trailer tire speed is 65mph.

Also when you buy tires look for an oval or a circle with 4 numbers in it on the tire. The first 2 digits are the week the tires was made and the last 2 digits are the year. Tire life is only about 6 years no matter if its on the rim or on the trailer/vehicle or sitting on the shelf.

When i buy tires i always look for the date and if they arent made in the current year i wont take them.

Default Balancing Tires

Balancing a tire does multiple things. First off, being that a tire is never perfectly round and perfectly weighted, the balancing of the tire allows the tire to run true and not vibrate. A vibrating tire means wear and tear not only on the tires, but on bearings, more vibration to the trailer itself, which creates undue stress at points whee that vibration is being absorbed. Over time, those points on the trailer that are absorbing that vibration will weaken over time...

Balancing the tires is a good thing to do...

I have a tandem axle Shoreland'r that came with my Lund. Based on my experience I had a terrible vibration when I went over 60 MPH on the highway, this started shortly after purchasing the rig back in 2009. Had my tires balanced and rotated, totally eliminated the issue so consequently every spring while having my trailer inspected I also have the tires balanced and rotated. A small price to pay IMHO!

CSH...when you rotate the tires on your tandem axle trailer, do you rotate front to back on the same side or in an X pattern?
