I moved my antenna away from the GPS unit and I found a new use for the old ram mount. Rod holder

Default Works like a charm

I got the new 4000 antenna and installed it over the weekend. Everything works like a charm. It was as simple as removing the old 3000 unit and plugging in the new one. The 4000 is quite a bit smaller than the 3000 so I was worried about holes in the gunnel, but it covered them up just fine. Just thought I'd give an update and that everything up and working again.

I just found out the other day that a weak or low battery will have a big effect on picking up a signal. A good sign is if you try to start your motor and the unit shuts off. As soon as I put the charger on the battery the unit locked into position.

I doubt this is a real cause. The GPS receiver chip probably runs on 5-volts or 3-volts. Its performance is unlikely to vary as a function of the 12-Volt battery voltage.

this is true

but the head unit receiving the signal from the gps antenna is the part that needs the 12v battery voltage.
