I caught my first musky today. wow...
On a number 5 hammered copper crawler harness. It wasn't a huge at 38 but did it fight!! It got tangled in two other lines and was jumping so high it would take the planer board with himself right out of the water!
Loads of fun. So I get my phone all set so my dad can take a bunch of pictures of it. Me and the musky are posing for about twenty shots. ....later I decide to check out the pics. Only one picture was actually taken....its kind of a close up. You can see my hand, the gill plate area and my hand.

I think Muskie in the 35-40 inch range, pound for pound, are the best fighters. Adolescents with an attitude

Either you have Andre the giant hands, or no way that musky is 38" I still remember my first musky 32" about 8lbs, A 38" would weigh about 14 - 15 pounds. I know pictures can be deceiving, fun to catch no matter what size.
opps I was looking at the pic from HRG |

Seriously that fish was comparable to a salmon. Different kind of fight but great.
The first time we had it to the boat I thought it was totally ready to be netted. Wrong. Sounded, drag singing, jumped, went perpendicular and tangled up our other lines. It did that a few more times less the tangling of other lines. After a couple of netting attempts I tried to just grab the fish under the jaw. That's when I found out one of the hooks was hanging out his gills. I decided that not only did I not want to get eaten but I also didn't want to get hooked so in the net it went. I was not prepared for this fish. It was interesting because I use to target big Northerns and I've never had a Pike fight nearly as hard. A 34" Northern seems to have the best of size and spunk but once you get to 40" its a good strike, one run then its usually not much else. I also noticed that a musky lacks the stiffness that a Northern does. When I picked it up the first thing I thought was *mushy*. At the same time how mushy I thought it was has nothing to do with it being a wimp. It was a better fight than any Northern I ever had on.
