Something interesting
I notice that many people asking for help about fishing locations on rivers or lakes mention they catch & release. Does catch & release affect what information or help you offer? Do you offer any useful info to anyone asking about a specific body of water? Would you offer good info on your favorite body of water?
Just curious what people do. |

Me, I will provide any info they could use
Fish swim and seem to always be on the move, therefore honey holes are useful but they won't put the fish in the boat alone. But then again, if you are in a big $'s Ranger with $10K worth of electronics, take my info with a grain of salt |

That post is a thing of beauty. And to stay on topic...... what he said. No seriously. If I don't fish a particular body of water very much, say I'm on vacation or a weekend trip, I will give very good detailed information. On my home bodies of water, no advice. Not even to friends. I had that backfire on me and it still stings.

Hints
I might share type of bait & dept info but I do not share specific locations on local lakes. General areas or water conditions maybe.

Depends on the body of water. A lot. In Ontario I'll let the camp operators know how we did, and where, in great detail so they can pass it on to the next group. I'll be very informative about the Great Lakes fisheries that are so prolific. Like Sportdog said, the local lakes can't take a pounding so I'm extremely choosy about info there. These lakes are small and 100% stocked, when the word gets around the fishery can be wiped out in no time, like less than a season. They don't get restocked every year so it might be 5-6 years before they recover if not longer. If I know the guy well, know that he limits his creel to match the water, know that he can respect my confidence, and know that he will return the favor someday, he'll get the tip. In application that usually means that he only fishes Lake Fullabigones when he's with me and I only fish Snappineyes Lake when I'm with him. I ignore the rivers because everybody knows there are no fish in the rivers unless the salmon or steelhead are running.
I don't do this for bass because there are so many tournaments I don't think there are any secrets. I'm even more closed mouthed about trout. Most of those waters don't get stocked at all and when the stream takes a hit it takes forever to recover. Way too many people seem to consider an 18" trout or a 23" walleye the fish of a lifetime. I'll give info to freinds or those who ask in person. NO specifics will be posted on the Internet

Most of the time I'll share. Before a tourney I won't even tell my wife. If the person asking is known as a spot jumper I won't offer anything, but otherwise I'm an open book.

I will almost always share tips and techniques and depths fished to catch fish but will not share specific spots or even lakes sometimes. Most of the times that is all I need to get started. I can read a lake map and do my own research as to where the fish I am fishing for is inhabiting.
