Muskie setup question
I'm looking to add another rod/reel combo. I currently have a St. Croix Premier Graphite 6 1/2 ft MH rod with a Abu Garcia 6500-C3 reel. I've been following the interest in longer rods (8 1/2 ft) with fast tips to throw big baits (double cowgirls, regular bulldawgs)and reels with faster retrieve to burn bucktails. The C3 has a 5.3:1 ratio with 25.5 in retrieve per turn with 15 lbs. max drag.
Any personal experiences on the above theories would be appreciated as well as suggestions for a second setup, brand & models included. |

What kind of baits do you want to throw? You'd want a different setup for tossing 6" slammers vs DCGs vs pounders. And, do you know about St. Croix's trade-up program? I've done that before, traded some Avids for LTs. |

musky combo
I use a Calcutta te 400 on a 8'6" st Croix and you can reel any bait you want.I also use two 8'6" bull dawg rods one with te 400 power handle and a tranx hg both can burn big double bucktails.I use a 7'6" and a 7'0" st Croix with Garcia 6500s for small bucktails and light baits. The longer rods really help in casting large baits and doing figure eights at the boat. You can't go wrong with a longer rod.

If you are not looking at Tackle Industries 9 footers you are missing the boat. Show me a rod with better seats, blank, guides or cork thickness for the money.
Shimano Curado 300 EJ or Calcutta 400B. You'll never look back. Put a St Croix decal on the rod. |
