Porposing?

I am not sure if that is how you spell it but......

2001 Tracker Targa 1900.....perfectly calm day and it would start jumping all over when you hit a certain speed. Can this be fixed or helped??

My 1650 Lund Explorer/60 Merc used to do the same thing on calm days.I had to lift the motor 1 hole higher and use wedges between the motor and transom,solved the problem right away.The dealership said the motor was too low in the water and was causing drag.When i trimed it up to get any speed the front end would pop up and down like crazy,and when i trimed it down it was slow and plowing.There was no happy medium until i raised the motor and added the wedges.Also gained 4 MPH.Hope this helps.

I have a Starcraft Tourney Pro 180 which is pretty much the same hull design, you may be a little longer. I have a SE 300 hydrofoil on mine which helped and I also had a High Five prop reworked by DAH to provide enough bow lift to solve the problem. These hulls were noted for having a porposing problem, do a search here on your hull and you will find more info. The other thing you could try is trim tabs or moving weight to the back of the boat. Hope this helps

Add a set of adjustable trim tabs and you can eliminate the problem completely.
Lots of folks with boats this size use trim tabs to let them be on plane at lower speed, and to keep the nose down when starting up.

Also, if you have independently adjustable trim tabs you can trim the boat to be level with side to side load changes.

once under way, i would always trim my motor up until it started doing that. then bump the trim down until it settles down. if i was trimmed up too high, the bow would bounce. too low, and it would veer to the right.

..with my Starcraft SF176 which usually runs with light loads. At around 45 mph on calm water the boat would bounce a bit. I played with the trim and found that a reading of 2.5 on the Merc trim monitor ( it tilts at 10) eliminated the bouce without inducing what is called "bow steer" from being trimmed in too much. I put a sticker on the throttle control box saying "2.5 normal trim", and just trim to this after the boat is on plane. Then if I want to go faster I just rim up a bit if running above 45.

Could be a weight distribution issue also. Do you have a heavy outboard and kicker on the transom?. Or a bunch of batteries? Sometimes moving 60-100 lbs forward to the bow will cure the issue. You can test it out by just placing a battery that was in the transom in the bow.

You are running too much prop from the sounds of it. What are your MAX WOT RPMS? Also if your outboard is too low on the transom you will have this issue as well as others have stated too much weight in the stern of the boat will also cause it. Check the engine height on the transom first then prop correctly. Personally I think you would be better with a 21 Temptest Plus prop on that setup.
