I see a lot of smaller glass boats around Florida, but most are center consoles. Some are the "bay-boat" design, shallower Vee, some are skiffs, and there are some deep vee models that are in that size range. Key West is a very well thought of brand, Sea Hunt another. I've been on the edge of buying a few times (looked very hard at a 17' Key West), very "fishy" designs that would work well in the north country as well.

Wade, I run a Stratos 1760DV with a 90hp Etec. The max HP is 115. Mine is a little under powered but it still does pretty good at 35-36 SOG...for the price I got the boat for I can live with the 90hp, cause I didn't buy it for speed. The 90hp uses a few gallons running around with the big motor all day. With a 115hp it would probably run in the low 40's SOG. 75% of my fishing is on Lake Michigan chasing salmon/trout, I've been out in 3-4's but don't want to make a habit of it and avoid it if possible. It fishes two people well, three is a crowd. I don't need to tell you the advantages of glass over tin...even with the cheap glass boats such as mine the same principles apply. I have some pix in the album.

Don't really like the layout, via the pictures.

Wade, I had the Yamaha 150 4 stroke too and it was fairly fuel efficient but I know what you mean about gas. I've bought a different boat since and still have a Yamaha so I'm not trying to sell the Mercury...but wasn't there a lot of the hype when the new Mercury 150 4 stroke came out that it was significantly more fuel efficient than other 150 4 strokes? I haven't seen the performance reports, but maybe its more similar to most competitors 115's...?

just to clarify thing, i have the larson 1750 with a 115 Merc EFI and its far from a dog. Not a raceboat, but doing decent speed and a **** good fuel economy.
Maybe am not loading my boat enough, but i fish most of the time 2, considering my fishing buddy and my weight, 525 pounds total, its still loaded. On plane well under 4 sec and a hair over 41 mph SOG (w/2 peoples) (46 on the speedo) with a 4 blades prop. If you think trailering, the place where i go most of the time is hill over hill and its a good 2 liters/100 km more with my 5.0 f150 while maintening the same speed. Easy to trailer. A good 150HP would be fun, i guess, but am happy with the 115. |
