Default 90 hp E-Tech rev-limiter

hey guys

over here on the Detroit river fishing for a couple weeks.
my rev- limiter has been coming on.

motor isn't hot,plenty of oil.
turn off the ignition and it will run sometimes for a couple days
before it happens again.

any ideas.

besides my wish for a 115 yammi four stroke.

thanks

Drag it over to Lockeman's and have them put the 'puter on it.

Curious as to what you found out in regards to this issue. I have a 90 E-TEC also and so far zero problems... hoping it was something minor!

It is not HO...wish it was but I bought it as a pkg used. Like the engine fine, it is on a 1825 Pro Guide and runs 35 WOT but fuel economy is great and so far no issues. I have had it 10 months but fished it a lot. Probably 3 day a week average since owning it.

How does the rev limiter work on an E-Tech? Most motors the engine will start missing or studdering at a few hundred RPM over max rated,as the ECM retards the ignition. Are you up past max RPM when this happens?

Just curious what are your actual symptoms, and at what RPM, that actually occures that makes you think it's the "rev limiter" ? Is there an actual indication on an E-Tech instrument panel that indicates it? May be something else.

E-Tecs have SAFE mode, when it detects no oil, overheating or other conditions that could damage the engine, it limits the RPMs to 1200. It's easy to detect because the RPM gauge will just sit at exactly 1200 no matter how much you throttle up.

OP, does safe mode come on after idling for a bit?

I had the same problem with a 50hp 2007 e-tec. A little googling and it seems like very cold water can make it detect a no oil condition. I keep it in forward and just turn it off instead of idling in neutral and haven't had any more safe mode trouble.

So if this is what may be happening, it's not actually the "rev limiter" as the term is typically used. Was asking in case his symptom was missing or studdering at RPMs lower than max, which could indicate an ignition or fuel malfunction.

When these go into safe mode, do they pop an code into the ECM that can be retieved with a scan tool or computer? Sounds like would be a good idea to get it to a dealer and see what forced it to safe.
