I agree with you in principle but I think that those who don't at least offer help........well that tends to speak for their character, or lack thereof. Like you I do those things also but I take notice of those without the common decency to even offer. Just my thought on that. As OP of the the thread I was not thinking about the financial aspect, although worth mentioning, but was thinking in terms of habits and behavior aspects of a fishing partner and a day on the water.

I agree with FIN too. Have had numerous mugs of coffe spilt, chips smashed in my carpet and my favorite, not dumping out the pee jug then knocking over in the boat. Sometimes you just got to laugh it off plus it makes good memories.
P.S. It makes good camp fire talk

Default Here's the rules as I see (and set) them:

1. A neat boat is a happy boat
2. A Happy boat is a productive boat
3. A productive boat is a happy captain

Violators are subject to ejection.

I don't expect a person to chip in on fuel or chip in help. I never take cash and hardly ever take help. But I expect them to offer both. It is up to me to reject them and tell them this trip was my treat.

Wade, Do you invite the people to go with you or do the people ask you to take them out?

Well, that's what makes my answer to your question tough.

Most times it's a "hey, you wanna go fishing next weekend?" kind a question. An offer would be nice here.

Some times it's a "I'm going fishing on XXXX, you are welcome to join if you want." On these ones there is no expectation of anything.

Lastly there are the preplanned trips (mutual planning) with guys and or tourneys. Those I expect to 50/50 the costs.

To be honest, I really want the courtesy of the offer. Not the actual help/cash.

A half pound of leeches and a case of beer?
Wondering how you get by that cheap??

Must get gas and maintenance/cost of equipment free?

Personally even if I don't ask, I think it shows a lack of character not to offer to kick in, a big lack of it.

I have a buddy who's usually having tough times, Nam was rough on him and he has a hard time keeping jobs.
I'll take him out and don't expect anything in return.

He comes back to my place at end of trip and helps unload and clean the boat up.
Sometimes I just drop him off and other time he insists to help.

But he always offers.

That's more than many of the people I go out with do.

It's not the money, although it helps, it's the offer that counts.

I have never had an irritating fishing partner. I do have some guys that I don't fish with anymore. Maybe that means...that would make me...aww crap

Had a guy once tell me on planning a trip to Canada with me he was gonna ride his motorcycle up to save gas money.

I told him have fun and I hope he finds a boat to fish out of.

But ya, some people are strange aren't they.
