Yamaha Warm-Up Time
I currently have an Yamaha F-250 on the back of the boat. My question is how long do you wait for the engine to warm up until you give it to get on plane. I know there are a lot of variables, but what do you do?
Thanks, BR |

I think around 5 minutes is sufficient maybe a little more if you are in real cold water. Sometimes my warm up time is idleing out to the deeper water and not nessisarily at the dock. Shouldnt make much difference at low RPM but I like the engine warmed up good before I put the hammer down.

The owner's manual for my F115 says 3 minutes. I try to adhere to that. It is easier when pulling away from the dock than when deciding to move to another fishing spot, then it seems like a long time.

My F150 manual also says 3 minutes, I usually give it at least 5. From the launch it is a non issues, because I have at least 1/3 mile to water I can throw a wake in, When starting up the motor out on the lake, I start it when I decide I am going to move with the big mill, and let it warm up while I stow rods, nets etc.

I do believe your manuals will tell you to let it idle to cool down a bit also. Like when flying from one fishing spot to another. Don't just turn it off when you get there.

motor warm up
I always let it run for more then three minutes. I'v e been around engines, both marine and commercial diesels for awhile, and a warm engine is a happy engine. If you have a 4 stroke, always allow enough time for the oil to warm, especially on cold damp days..

I have my F75 engine interface through my HDS 7. It takes 1-2 minutes to get up to 100F. By 3 it's up in the 110-120. Mine really doesn't go much higher than that until you take it out of neutral and put a load on it. I usually motor out at 1500 or so for my 4th minute and then she's good for the hammer.

Like some of you, my idle when first starting out is to idle away from the dock or shore. When getting to fishing hole, usually let the motor idle for awhile while getting fishing stuff ready. When getting ready to move, usually start the motor before pulling all gear so get some idle time before taking off. Been doing this for over 20 years and have yet to have a problem, knock on wood.

Does your F250 not give you full power if it's not warm enough?
