September Lakers on Whitefish

Hitting Whitefish with a couple dudes from WC in mid/late September. My ice fishing passion is lake trout on Whitefish, but I've never had the opportunity to fish them on open water. How can they be caught as the season is coming to a close?

Although not as purist as artificials, dead baiting usually works well in most places I've tried for trout.
