best ice shanty heater
I just ordered a new Fish Trap Guide as the old one was breezy. I want a good heater. The 20# tank unit I now is just awfully heavy to pull around. Are these new small catalytic units any good? What works for you in your own shelter (or in your Fish Trap) when its windy and cold?
And, anyone own a Fish Trap Guide and are happy with it?? Thanks |

RE: best ice shanty heater
Mr Buddy is a good one. Probably find it at Farm and Fleet type store or Cabela's.

RE: best ice shanty heater
Yes the lil buddy wil probably work I do not own one but I saw Gander in Burnsville had them on sale for 79$ which is 20$ under what they sold for a while back. Depending on your location I think I would find a 5# LP tank to run your Mr Heater but if you live in a warmer climate it might be to warm even on low. I like to take my jacket off when in a house but if it's cold I think the trap design houses do not make it possible.

Mr.heater -Buddy- very nice. Has a oxygen sensor that will shut off if you run low on o2. Just keep the tubes clean. Spiders love to get in there during the summer and clog things up.

I use a Fish trap guide, and am very happy with it. Its probably the best shelter on the market for the walk on fisherman.I have a Colman powercat catalytic heater, that uses 16 oz.cylinders, its light weight, and each cylinder lasts for about 8 hours. this is the first season for it , and so far I have no complaints.

RE: best ice shanty heater
If you want a really tiny heater - that does an adequate job for most fish trap applications unless it is really blowing or really below zero - is the use of a single burner backpacking propane stove.
With a 5 lb bottle - these little single burners, screw right into the end of the bottle. Open the valve - light it and you have heat. You have side benefit of cooking a pot of "Joe" or heat up a can of beans, or fry a burger or brat. The nice thing is that this burner is only about 4 inches across and weighs about 4 ozs. Typically these burners are rated for about 8000 btus - which is plenty for a fish trap - unless it is really cold or windy. The other part is that they are typically about $20 at most camping supply stores. Take care REW |

RE: best ice shanty heater
The heater that I use for most of my ice fishing - it is a bit of an over kill for a fish trap, but will use it at times, is a home made heater, that I made from an old turkey brooder lp burner. The nice thing about this heater - that I made from a heater and a section of stove pipe, is that it has a thermostat. i.e. I adjust the high heat level, as well as the low heat level - of the flame.
When it is cold - or if I open the door, the heat springs to the maximum high heat level that I have pre set. Then, as the house warms, the flame drops to a lower level, until it drops back to pilot light. When, the temperature cools again, the burner lights again, and the flame rises as required to maintain the heat. Because I was able to get the burner and thermostat for $20 - the entire heater, after building the rest of it was less than $40. If needed - this heater will put out about 50,000 btus - however, on pilot or slightly above, it puts out only about 1,000 btus. It simply works very well for many different conditions, and sizes of houses. Similar style prebuilt heaters are available for about $100 - $150 on the market. As I said at the beginning of the post - the simple single burner cook top that attaches to the tank generally works very well for a fish trap. Take care REW |
