RE: What kind of oil for 4 stroke Yamaha?
It wasn't Amsoil that decided we needed a new specification for marine applications, it was the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). Right or wrong, we now have a separate specification for 4-strok marine applications. It seems that many of the manufacturers have endorsed the new spec.
I tend to agree that there is a difference between the typical automotive application and the marine application. Other than race car drivers, I am not aware of very many motorists that only know two speeds...idle and WOT. That seems to be real common in marine applications. I don't know what the NASCAR folks use for oil, but I would think it would it would be a better iuk than the oil than most of us use in our vehicles. |

RE: What kind of oil for 4 stroke Yamaha?
I know on the rating, but I was giving amsoil a hard time.
Notice the smily face at the end... But you might be supprised at what the racers are using, remember sponsership dollars, many were using Mobil one when I was in racing. The big fuel boys were in a world of their own, and I'm not sure what they were using. I was using Kendall GT-0ne in a 20-50 or straight 50wt in the turbo bike I ran, both automotive oils. With a 1100cc motor I made over 230hp and the oiled worked just fine. Automotive oils will take a beating....and keep on ticking. (sorry) I was just wondering what on a outboard made for a different oil? Al |

If FC-W really a tradmark as indicated in a previous note? Is that just a lab that the oil companies run their product to in order to get the rating??
There probably is no difference between last years Yamaha oil and this years',other than its been tested and passed?? Hmmmm...who pays for the testing?? Does everybody who pays pass ??? Do they have to continue to pay to keep the rating??? |

RE: What kind of oil for 4 stroke Yamaha?
Could it have something to do with lower operating temperatures? I think most cars are running around 190 degree thermostats. I don't think outboards run that hot. Two stroke outboard oil is different from 2 stroke motorcycle or chainsaw oil. I thought is was a temperature difference there also.

Might be, although long about Jan/Feb here in Minn I might argue that not many outboards will be running in -20 weather and I'll still be driving to work...:) Possibly average operating temps are generally lower?
