RUST!!!!!!! problems and fixes
So i have a few questions, i had a couple boxes i left on my boat all year last year. Long story short, had a jig box, a few crank bait boxes, and one of my crawler harness boxes get water in them and get a light rust on the hooks, split rings, blades...
Question is: is there anyway to remove the rust? I havent done anything except air out the boxes. and what step do you guys take to keep rust out. This is a good time to replace the trebles on my cranks... is there anythign that will wipe the rust off crankbait bodies? or blades? |

First, try steel wool on all rusted areas. Replace all the real bad split rings and trebles. File the rest with a hook sharpener.
Tape some of those silicone bags that companies put in new purchases in the top of your trays for future control.

You can try soaking them Coke or Ketchup. Both are slightly acidic. I have tried Coke with some success on some spinner blades that I left in the back of my pickup.

KS,
Just brush on some Rust jelly. Let sit for a 1/2 hour and wipe off the rust. Wash well with soap and water and you will be good to go. Throw away the jigs and harnesses. Replace the snap rings and hooks on the crank baits. Lesson of the day - don't leave anything in your boat after a trip. Always open all tackle boxes in the cabin at the end of the day to insure that everything is completely dry. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2159&ppt=C0171 Take care REW |

I dont have a solution for the damage done, but to prevent future problems you can try zerust. I have been useing Zerust in my boxes and have not had a hook rust since I started using it.

For rust prevention in tackle trays or boxes, I throw in a few of those tiny canisters/packets of desiccant you find in supplement/vitamin/medication bottles - they're free, and they really work.

I had a similar issue a couple of years ago. I ended up retying my harnesses. Wasn't worth the effort to try and remove what was rusted. I did however, find the below product at Walmart in the tool section. So far, so good.
