Default Noises from my Terrova

I have a 8 year old Terrova 101 and notice strange noises come and go out of the directional drive. Has anyone replaced this and would know the approximate cost of replacement? Yesterday I was playing around with it and it made the different noise then quit and worked great for the rest of the afternoon. Not going to even take it in if it going to cost too much to fix...just throw it into the scrap heap and buy a new one.

Default Terrova Repair

8 years is pretty good for something in a marine environment. I am lucky i have a repair center in my town. There are bearings in them and even though mine is only 1 year old i have rust streaks on my base and shaft and have noises. Perhaps if you sprayed some deep lubricant in near the head it may give you an idea if the noise goes away. You are probably right in thinking about buying a new one as it may cost you a fair bit to ship to a repair center (darn things are heavy and oversize) and the new ones are a little bigger in thrust and tracking options.

There really are no bearings, a few roller pins within the steering housing.
A bunch of nylon gears and some lube.
There is a bushing that the shaft travels though that can wear out.
I have repair/rebuilt a few, not a difficult or costly task.
The part # 2997025 is about $125 for a brand new steering housing, again this is by far the easiest way to go.
Save the old housing and rebuild it, selling it off.

Here is the parts list.
Print it out in a large nice size, and use it when you take the motor apart.

Continue taking the motor apart until you find the worn or dry parts and either replace them or lubricate them as needed.

It is really quite simple to disassemble such a motor. Just use a camera and take a lot of pictures as you disassemble the motor to be sure that it goes back together correctly.

Be safe

Default Terrova

No bearings? Well I wonder where my rust is coming from? Could it be a brass sleeve? I will be taking it in at the end of the year for repair (wired direct and no quick release bracket) good advice from the posters. I thank you too.

I forgot to say that the noise didn't start until after the boat sat in the garage for a month and the temp was round 38-40 F when I was fishing.

Thanks for all the suggestions and possible remedies. I'm fortunate that the authorized repair depot is only 20 miles away.
