Default Brakes on backing up

2010 Ranger Angler and brakes are not releasing during backup. They had worked and now do not. Vehicle is correctly wired and backup lights on trailer come on when vehicle put in reverse. Where do I start looking for the problem, pain in butt try to block the inertial tongue with the stinky little key that came with trailer.

Check your reverse solenoid. It should be in the tounge somewhere behind the master cylinder. You should be able to hear or feel it "click" when there is 12V present from the reverse light circuit.

Thumbs up

Yup, what Eli said. But you will only hear or feel the click when the power is first applyed or removed. I bought a 1 1/2 inch round magnet from home depot and put it over the key to hold it in the slot when i need to use it. I then snap it on the winch post to store it. Wiredog

Thanks for the input, so in the tounge somewhere? Easy to change if that the problem, I am still in warrantly but my dealer is 70 miles away, if its a easy fix I could do it myself and save towing 140 miles plus all the other hasle.

Also check to make sure that there is power to the reverse solenoid. You may have power to the B/U lites but not to the solenoid. I just had to run a temporary jumper to my T/L because somewhere in the trailer channel something is messed up. I've got clearance & brake lights but no tail lights. This winter I'll fish and hook up a new harness for that side. Good luck !
