Default New boat motor

I am going to be ordering a new 1875 Lund Pro V soon and am wondering what everyones thought are on the 175 Verado motor. This is the motor that I am planning on putting on it. The other motor that I have thought about was the 150 4 stroke. What are the good and the bad of both motors.

I think I would wait to see if Merc comes out with the rumored 175 based on the normal aspirated 150 at the Miami show. Then you can see the 175 Verado go the way of the dodo as did the 150 Verado did when the 150 normal aspirated 150 came out. Yamaha is killing Merc with its 175-200 's based on their light weight 150's. So it's sure to come.

I would not be afraid of the 175 Verado. It is an excellent match with your hull. Yamaha isn't killing anything. They are consistent underperformers. Reliable? Yes. Performers? Not exactly. If you plan on being buried in it, buy any motor you want. If you plan on selling at some point in the future max out the horsepower.

Really? To whom is absolute maximum "performance" vitally important? Maybe someone who races, or the top 1% of professional bass fisherman to whom getting to a key spot 1/8 of one second before the other guy is critical (unless they picked the wrong spot...)

To any normal fisherman, running a normal boat for fishing...it doesn't matter.

No, I don't run a Yamaha...but I recognize a good thing when I see it.

1) Yamahas are not "under-performers".

2) People sell boats every day that aren't maxed out.

They sure do. For way less than the maxed out horsepower boats. The percentage of retained value drops substantially on underpowered boats. You are exactly right though everything sells at a steep enough discount.

If it were me, I'd max out the HP with the L6 Verado. It will pay off in the long run.

Do you have any evidence to back that up ?

The majority of Skeeter mx 1825s and Ranger 1880s are sold with 150s even though they are rated 200 and 175.
I see used ones selling for near the cost of new.

...but they paid way less up front as well...

I would challenge that "The percentage of retained value drops substantially" without objective evidence of that.

It has not been my experience at all.

That is exactly what I see.

There is a big difference between what is being characterized as "under powered" and more than enough to get the job done. Running a 90 HP motor on an 18 ft. aluminum boat rated for 150 HP might be under powered. Running a 140 on that same boat is not.

I also challenge that maxing out a boat's power rating is the most efficient and effective way to run a boat. Doing that is not true of of any other motorized vehicle we buy...why would it be unique to boats?

The advantage to the 175 is more speed. Likely 2-4 more mph than the 150.

The advantage to the 150 is less cost, and not having a blower, fewer parts so may be fewr repairs.
