Group disscusion? Lowrance Touch and LSS.
I've moved from my LCX 25/26 series into a new touch 9. A little intimidating at first, but as you'll see, These units are game changers. The LSS is amazing, and I don't even know if I"m using it at even 50% of it's potential.
Only problem is the learning curve, there are so many options and settings. Feel free to add any info you may have for the collective members here. IN my particular case, I primarily fish fresh water, under 50 feet. LSS. Why is my water temp not showing up on the structure pages? I have water temp on sonar and chart pages. When using LSS, which freq do you use under what conditions? IF I save a screen shot, where is it stored? to a card? do I need to specify which card? How would I view the screen shot? Any actual differences between all the various Palettes? Sonar. Again which frequency for what conditions? Palettes? Charts. What is the maximum number of 'points' allowed to each trail, before the trail is maxed out? The LCX series allowed you set points up to 9999 points. I see no setting or option to set points on the HD series. Again, if You have questions, feel free to jump in........... |

The HDS series has internal GPS, these 'pucks' do not draw power while the HDS unit is off?

LSS.
Why is my water temp not showing up on the structure pages? I have water temp on sonar and chart pages. You need to set up the structure page info just like the others When using LSS, which freq do you use under what conditions? Personal preference as to which you like IMO IF I save a screen shot, where is it stored? to a card? do I need to specify which card? How would I view the screen shot? I've always saved screen shots to a SD card, but you have to turn the screen shot feature on everytime you boot the HU up. I've only used one SD card at a time, but my HDS 8 has 2 slots. Any actual differences between all the various Palettes? Some palettes will show better detail/definition to some people and not to others. Personal preference to what you like. Sonar. Again which frequency for what conditions? Palettes? Time out on the water and trying different settings/colors/freqs will allow you to set your HU up the way you prefer. Some people never stop adjusting their HU, while others find what they like and leave it be.

Turn the screen shot on? I thought you simply pressed both buttons at the same time?
re: temp on structure screen, I can see the overlay data selection on the screen, but no temp is visible, just 3 dotted lines. |

The 3 dotted lines means it is having trouble at that moment reading the water temperature. I find that usually speed is the problem when I cant get a reading. I have had mine all season and Im always playing with it trying to learn something new. A great tool to have on board!

So, I've got some screen shots on my SD card, but can't get em onto my laptop. How do I get them somewhere I can view them instead of just on my unit?

Frequencies
Assuming your 9 is a Gen 2
Will find the 200 the best frequency, with a 22 degree cone angle as compared to 52 degree on 83 KHZ Difference is the 22 is tighter and covers less bottom area as compared to the 52 degree. Like a flashlight 200-22 tighter brighter focused and 83 wider not as bright or focused. Images with the 200 are distinct and sharper when compared to the 83 KHZ. more concentrated Lss assuming you have a Lss-2 Agree like using Lss-2 ss/ds when crusing an area remember works best when moving 2-7 miles an hour. Otherwise I go back to 2D when back trolling slow. Having two ducer frequencies on split is great one wide and the other narrow I really like for my fishing. IF your unit is a Gen 3 chirp capable, I like medium chirp for most water 50 and less. The touch allows each switching around 2d, ds/ss quicker and easier. While I like the performance I get out of Airmar transducers, the Lowrance skimmer 83-200 is a excellent one too |

Digging back through the old brain memory files to long ago Electronic Tech school, higher frequency means shorter wavelength which translates into better target separation. Which means that the 200Khz transducer will be able to show walleyes laying on the bottom better than the 83Khz transducer can. However, for deep water situations the 83Khz transducer will be better able to find bottom due to it's longer wavelength. I don't think most freshwater fisherman will have to worry about this unless they're fishing the Great Lakes. Pulse Repetition Rate figures in too but I don't trust my memory well enough to try and get into that discussion.
