I see a HUGE difference in mpg and how hard the truck is working between tarped up and open with the bubbles on. It['s also critical to have support on the tarp to keep it tight and keep the shape, a loose billowing tarp will cancel out the gain while potentially damaging the boat. It's worth putting the travel tarp on if you're hitting the highway at all. Tire pressure and axle alignment are all that's left. Unfortunately, the long and short of it is that you're not going to see much better mpgs than you are right now no matter what you do with the boat/trailer, that's just the nature of the beast when towing, especially with a gas engine. The only sure fire way to increase mpg - slow down lol. Waxy |

I, likewise, have experienced a significant mileage improvement since adding a snap-on cover. An additional 2mpg is not out of the question.

As far as trailers go, yes. I have towed: 11000lb cargo, 10000lb bobcat, 1500lb motorcycle. I'm not here to ask if someone can tell me how to air up my truck tires, or act like they know what my truck is capible of.
A good tight tarp and slowing down is your only hope for any better mileage with that truck and pulling a 4000 lb anchor behind it. If your pulling the above loads with that truck at 70 to 80 MPH , please stay in Nebraska and off of I 80, thats border line insane, Good Luck |

Glad to know I'm not the only guy that thinks this guy is insane in believing that his gas truck will get awesome mileage pullling a good sized boat at 70 or so mph. . . I don't care if they graduated from a mechanic class in the past, that doesn't mean squat.

I had a 2007 suburban. It had 5.3 and 3.73 gears. The mileage empty was 16 at best in mostly highway driving and would drop to 8 to 9 pulling 18 ft glass boat. 6 when pulling my 16 ft enclosed trailer. Would run non ethanol fuel and tow 55 to 65 mph. I wrote down every single gallon of fuel I put in it and the computer calculated mileage was always .5 to 1 mpg higher than actual. Just my experience. Take it for what it's worth.

Heres my experience all towing a Warrior V193 covered. 1999 Surburban 1/2 ton 350 4.10 gears 33" tires = 3.75 ratio many engine and transmission mods 75-80mph = 11mpg, 70-75mph =12mpg in 4yrs never saw 13mpg / 2006 duramax 3.73 gears highway speed didn't make much difference always got around 12mpg speeds 70-80mph / 2010 GMC 6.2 Max Tow pkg. 3.73 gears ext cab w/ tonneu cover. Same basic figures as you 17.5-19.5mpg highway running empty. Towing was always 10-11 running 75-80mpg. Last summer I tried to experiment on some longer runs where I could hold a constant speed to get the best mileage. I found the sweet spot to be 67mph. The first long trip (1500 miles round trip DL ND) I tried it on we got 12.8 & 13.2 mpg. On that trip alone averaging 2mpg's better I figured we saved $108 in fuel costs. The trip only took about an hr. longer each way. Unless it was shifting alot I did not put it in tow/haul mode I just left the tranny do it's thing. I bought the truck to replace the Duramax as in 80,000 miles I had injector problem 3 different times that would have cost me close to $10,000 if not for warranty. I went w/ a 1/2 ton for a little better ride quality. So far @ 35,000 miles I'm impressed. I ocasionally pull my Bobcat w/ it and trailer my boat probably 10,000 miles a year. It doesn't have quite the torque of the Duramax, But darn close. So my advise: SLOW DOWN and enjoy the ride !! I hope this helps. PM me if you have any ?? Oh yah, tire pressure to the max!

Nosebleed, I've got a very simliar combination to yours.
Truck - 2004 2500HD Crew Cab, 6 litre gas, 4X4 - Only mine has the 4.10 rear with the 4 speed auto trans. Boat - 2004 Pro V 225 Yamaha, T8 Kicker, walk through windsheild, etc... My truck has a lifetime average fuel mileage of 12mpg. It gets 10mpg when I'm really hoofing it pulling the boat (70-74mph). Otherwise, I can count on 12 mpg regardless of what I do. There's nothing wrong with your truck or trailer, it's just the way GM built them. Blair |

Last thing, given the fact that I get 18-20 going 65mph and 13 going 80mph It's clear these trucks are very sensitive to drag. Be it wind, load, rolling resistance etc..... Right lane here I come!

DOT doesn't have a problem with it, I don't see why you do. Truck is rated for it what's the problem? I make sure they are both under 10,400lbs if i'm hitting the highway. Also anyone who has done any kind of significant towing knows that the manufactures ratings are low. I've had a 21,000lb forklift on a 5th wheel dual tandom, scaled at 32,000lbs (with truck on scale)..... with a Single axle 2500 duramax. Now THAT's stupid. truck was rated for 21000. Point is It actually pulled and controlled fine. As long as the trailer has good brakes, and you're not an idiot, you can get away with it. FYI I never would have done this for more than a counrty hwy going 45mph for a couple miles. My trucks rated for 10,400.... do it all the time, and yes in Iowa and I-80.

We do agree on one thing, Good Luck |
