Painting a boat...
I have a used Canadian camp boat - not a Lund Camp, just a used fishing boat. Flat floor, battery, bilge pump, pedistal seats, vinyl interior. I want to paint it for duck hunting on my home lake. It isn't even necessary to paint it for late season divers - we used to hunt out of a S14 (red) Lund with great success. But I want to paint the boat with factory drab - maybe the Alumacraft drab. I like the alumacraft drab better.
What do I need to know about paint aluminum? I will clean it well. Do I need to rough up the surface for the paint to stick (sand - Scotchbrite)?. Is there special paint I should use - maybe I can get some factory paint. But I think factories bake the paint on(?). I have a Wagner Power-Painter and an airless sprayer. So laying down the paint shouldn't be too bad. If I want camo, I can use rattle cans and patterns. I think I'll leave the bottom original - less drag? Paint the sides and interior. Maybe I shouldn't even attempt it? Thoughts and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Acid etch eh? I mentioned a product, on a different thread, that my neighbor used to wash his pontoon for winter storage. It had acid in it. I may just spray the boat with that.

I've had good results by stripping the old paint off with airplane paint stripper it get all of the paint off to bare aluminum. Afterwards you need to apply a self etching primer that available at auto paint stores, after it dries you can put whatever paint you want on it

I painted a Lund Pro V to make it into a duck boat. I just removed the decals (big pain in the butt), roughed the surface a little with sand paper and painted it with Parker duck boat paint. I used a roller and paintbrush and it came out awesome. Also painted the Johnson 90HP motor with the same paint. The boat served me well for both hunting and fishing. I removed zero of the original paint, and it was maroon and gold. Never had any peeling problems. When I'd scratch up the paint I'd just grab a brush and touch it up.
