They are used because they are cheaper to manufacture. Some axels that appear square are open on the bottom side. The axel only has a top side and two vertical sides, no bottom side.

So given this is the best bet to take it to an alignment shop as REW suggested or should I be doing something else at this point? If the suggestion is an alignment shop does anyone have a recommendation for a "good one" in the Appleton, WI area?

Let your fingers do the walking to find a shop that does trailer alignment work.

I would weigh your setup and check the axle weight of your trailer. I passed on buying a new Crestliner because the boat with a few accessories was over the axle weight. Dealer said it's fine, they sell them all the time on base trailer. I'd definitely weigh your setup and check.
