I don't know why they have them, but I use them as a semi line counter on a spinning reel. Well they aren't actually a line counter, but if you are trolling with a spinning reel and get a hit, place a rubber band around the spool before you reel in. That way when you let line out again, it should stop at the rubber band, giving you the same "feet back" and trolling depth of the lure. That's my excuse for seeing rubber bands on the butt of my rods.

Default Big Fat Rubber Bands

I have them on all my rod butts. Use them to stick the bottom of bottom bouncers into (hook the harness on whatever eye is closest) when I move to another spot.

I used to use rubber bands on them to put them weights into them or they were simply used to keep my two piece rods together when they're in two pieces.

Also helps keep the rod holders from chewing up the grips on cork grips.

Another good way of securing BB's is to use the small pipe cleaners. I just hook the spinner on the hookkeeper and then wrap around the rod and bouncer with the pipe cleaner. Keeps everything tight between spots and trips.

I like to use a strip of Velcro around bb's, and also when I have a bobber on the line. Eliminates multiple rod tangles considerably when carrying. Rubber bands work, too, except they break.

Ditto the velcro, I use 3M tomato plant tie that I get at Ace for about $5 for 50'. One spool goes a long way. Tom

I use the rubber band for my 9 ft trolling rods to keep them together when I break them down.

Lightbulb Lure holds for pre-rigs

Another use is pre-rigs tied up and ready to go on the rods in the locker tubes.

Most factory hook holds are above the cork, on the rod blank, so lures get in the way of rod locker tubes for storage. Bass Spinnerbaits are a good example of this situation.

The band will keep things from getting too tangled and allow faster switch over on presentations.

Another is color coding rods, for quicker reference in a fully loaded rod locker.
