Default Spinner Hook Size with Gulp Crawlers

Just wondering what the thought was on hook size for worm harness rigs and pulling the new Gulp bait. I generally always used two # 4 octopus hooks on these rigs but with plastic/gulp not giving much it seems to fill up the hook more. I would think a couple of numbers # 2's might be a better bet. Any adivise on this? The reason I ask is i had a few missed fish recently that would drag along on the bait but missed the hook set. I guess the Gulp comericals are true, fish bite & won't let go

Ironguts,

I tie most of my spinners with # 2 (some #4, 1 and 1/0 also). On some days dropping the rod tip back (or the board) a little and then set will hook a few more. I like to use good quality (sharp) hooks for spinners-Gami's are my favorite.

Here's a picture of suggested hooks and sizes for rigging plastic worms.

I agree on the Gami hooks they are the best but due to price I sometime's use VMC's on my spinner rigs. I think I might go up a size for the plastics & just burn up the rest for live baiting.

One trick I've picked up when rigging plastic crawlers is to just skin hook the crawler. You can put the hook right the middle on the front hook, but just nick the skin on the back hooks. This exposes a lot more hook, and should help you out a lot. When a crawler gets ripper off the hook, it's also a lot more likely to hold together this way too, rather than hooking it through the middle and having it get torn in half when a fish grabs the tail. Good luck!

I just got back from a trip to NW Ontario where I used Gulp crawlers with good success. I rigged them with a #2 Gamekatsu octopus as the front hook (just barely through the tip of the nose leaving plenty of hook showing) and a a #2 or 4 treble in back (impale the worm with one tine of the treble leaving two open). I hooked fish on both the front hook and the treble. Good luck.
