I personally wouldn't recommend the wrist strap idea, just too many safety issues there. I lost my first Beckman overboard, went without for a few months, and wound up replacing it. I have a rod holder on a pedestal seat mount that slipped sending the net in the water trolling in heavy seas. I didn't go hungry over it... Things can just happen: cellphones, rod and reel combos, tackle, clothing, cameras can all fall in the drink. You can't put floats on everything. Most of the times I've seen nets go in the drink isn't when one is netting a fish anyway (although I've seen that once with a 20lb king in it ). Most of the time it falls out of a rod holder or falls off the boat in the fray of a double or triple when it doesn't get stowed correctly.

I personally focus on making sure it's stowed securely at all times and other than that...hold on tight. If you've got newbies on the boat do all the netting.
