Hook Set with Weedless Jigs and Hooks
I have never used weedless hooks or weedless jigs before. I just bought a couple of Northland Weed Weasles and some Lindy snells with fine wire type weed guards on them. Will I need to do anything different when setting the hook ? Will I need to let the fish have the bait longer or do I set sooner than I would with a typically? Anything you can share with me about this type of fishing is appreciated. Thank You, Jim

RE: Hook Set with Weedless Jigs and Hooks
Jim,
No; as a matter of fact - from time to time when you fish with weedless jigs; you will feel pressure - and set the jig on a weed. When this happens - let the jig sit for a few seconds. Often the commotion of setting the jig on a weed, will attract a fish, who will pick up the baited jig lying on the bottom - and when you set it again - there will be a fish on the hook. Feel pressure - set the hook. Sometimes a weed, but often a fish. Take care REW p.s. When working weeds - especially shallower weeds - use the lightesy jig possible. Often the 1/16th oz jig is the best weight jig for tese applications. |

RE: Hook Set with Weedless Jigs and Hooks
I have been using Lindy's Veggie-Jig all season here in Phelps, Wisconsin where we have some great weed walleye action and have impressed fellow guides who use mostly ball jigs. I dont think you have to wait to set the hook at all. I also think that wire gaurds are alot more plyable then the heavy plastic gaurds.
Enjoy the outdoors, Colin |

RE: Hook Set with Weedless Jigs and Hooks
Here is a tip for more posotive hooksets when it come to weedless guards... bend the medal wires so they are more flexible, this will help to create more posotive hooksets.
