Salmon Fishing on Western Lake Michigan

Planning a vacation the second week in July and my daughter would like to go Salmon fishing. I need some recommendations as to where to go: Port Washington, Milwaukee or any suggested area....Secondly any recommendations on a charter boat? Should a person fish all day or do an evening and or morning trip. Thank you and typically at this time of year is it a good bite or slow, normally I fish for Walleye......thanks again!

get some good reviews from guys on here prior to booking. When I took charters in the past, I wanted to feel like I was fishing, not driving around real slow reeling in fish. There are a few guys in northern IL that I can recommend that are hard core and love getting clients on big fish, not just a limit and then back to the dock.

I do a ton of fishing on the great lakes for salmon. Second week of July you would normally want to fish around kewaunee, Algoma, or Sturgeon Bay. However, this year has been pretty slow up north. The fish are much bigger (we had a 24.9 and a 25.2 last weekend) but far fewer of them. But then again, the southern ports have slowed down in the last few weeks.

Steve is always on fish that time of the year and he will treat you right. Tell him that I told you to call. He is located in Kewaunee WI. Good places to stay (Coho Hotel) and good food too.

You will want to to a morning trip. You get up super early to head out as the best action is right at dawn. Take a nap and go to bed early for the next morning and do it again.

That said, you said "vacation" and with that in mind, Door County is where you want to go. Charter either out of Sturgeon Bay, or for less of a crowd, Bailey's Harbor. In Baileys Harbor, I like Captain Lynn Frederick. She also is a PhD in fisheries and is very interesting if you like the straight skinny on the lake. Also your daughter might get a kick out having a woman charterboat captain.
