Default squirrel season

I can remeber getting so pumped up to go squirrel hunting with my Dad. Finally, he allowed me to hunt with a 410. We shot fox squirrels in central Ohio. Once a year, we would go to his "old home place" up a holler in West Virginia and hunt gray squirrels. We would hunt 4 or 5 days with an Uncle or two joining us. An absolute thrill for a youngster to be introduced to hunting camp like that. Mild weather, camping, cooking our own grub, stories, laughs, and a worthy game animal. I still make the trip and have taken, nephews, sons, and grandson and granddaughter down there. I don't get as many with the 22 as I can't hold steady, but the shotgun delivers some great tablefare.

That is how I was introduced to hunting as a very young lad back in Iowa. My father woudl take me out squirrel hunting, wiht my job being to run him around the tree into range for my father to shoot him. Baked squirrel and gravel, potatoes was to die for coming out of mom's dutch oven. I have not done so in years, but it is something I would do again in a heart beat.

Squirrel hunting was one of my first outdoor experiences and continues to be one of my favorites. Super fun and super simple compared to say, deer hunting. When I hunt deer, I drive myself crazy with all the details and feel pressure cause it's 9 days with a long year in between. When I hunt squirrels I keep it simple...gun, call, and a pocket fulla shells. I also have months to do it.
