Default Battery Charging

Hello.....
Just wondering if everyone opens the battery compartments while charging the batteries on their boats to let the gasses escape. What about charging the batteries with the boat cover on do you vent the cover to let the gasses escape.

I now crack open the lid on my battery compartment, after finding evidence of out-gassing (kinda like a white, powdery residue) evident on some of the aluminum pieces inside. I'm using conventional wet-cells, I imagine those with sealed AGM batts don't see the same issue.

Gases released by charging are explosive, I would surely vent when ever possible on a non moving boat.

I usually open the the area as well as put a fan on to cool charger and circulate the air. Nels
