Where do all the boats go?
With the thousands and thousands of boats that have been sold over the years, where do these boats end up when people get in accidents or they cant sell them? Shouldn't there be boat "junkyards"? If there is, I'd like to know where they are. Just in case I would need a part, seeing Lund doesn't make parts for my boat anymore. 11 year old boat and very few parts available. Same with Mercury.
Someone want to enlighten me on this? |

I think the aluminum hulled boats probably all get recycled.

I've often wondered this myself. There has to be 10s of thousands of boats out there...
Where are all of these boats? I know each spring you see some old boats from the 70s and 80s come out of the shed, but where are they all now? There has to be tons of them out there. It's not like you can just drop them off at the garbage dump or recycle them like cars. What becomes of them? Are there boat "boneyards"? I hope someone has some info on this. Waxy |

Where I live, the ones that aren't sitting in someones back yard either go to a guy that takes them apart and sells parts or they go to the land fill.

Junk Yards
Here is one place they go...there are junk yards and boat yards all over. You just need to find them.
http://junkyardinc.com/boats.htm There are a lot of Boat Yards around the Great Lakes ports. I doubt very much that you would ever find a LUND in a junk yard though. It would either be scrapped or handed down to someone else in the family before it would ever just go sit in a junk yard waiting for you to go and pluck a part off of it. Juls |

It's really not the hull I was reffering to. It's the interior. As an example at one time I thought about turning my LE single console into a dual console. Lund does not make the parts anymore, so if I could find one that was in an accident and beyond repair, I could get the parts that way. I can see not finding a hull, but interior parts must be somewhere. But I was just curious as to where all the boats end up in case I might need some other "interior" part.

Ok, I see...yeah, that's a little harder to find anything on. No links what-so-ever (that I could find quickly anyway).

Recreational Salvage (I believe recreationalsalvage.com) out of Perham MN has an online auction with damaged boats and other items. Some nice items, some that would be great platforms for a total rebuild to suit your needs (older 5.5 Tyee right now). I do not know of any boneyard that would strip parts like the standard auto junkyard.

I have wondered about this also. My boat is old (1987 Crestliner Viking) but in good shape. You rarely see them any more. At one time I thought maybe I could find replacement seats from one that was salvaged but couldn't even find one. I saw a Lund ProV come through town one day (on a flat bed truck)that had been in a traffic accident and the seats, pedistals and bases were all like brand new. The guy said it was being taken to an insurance company for an adjuster to look at. But the hull was smashed beyond repair so I am sure it was totaled...always wondered what they did with the seats etc. There must be a grave yard for old boats somewhere.
